A Tribute to Andy: An American Gift

Its Friday friends, and time for another Friday Night Cocktail at the Henderson’s. This week, we children of the 60’s lost an important icon of our memories – Mr. Andy Griffith, best known to us as Andy Taylor, Sheriff of Mayberry. As husband and I have talked about Andy's death and his show, we both realized just how much of a role model Sherriff Taylor was for us, and most likely many of our generation. Think about all he embodied. It went well beyond just the symbolism of a good law abiding servant of the peace. Sheriff Andy was a fair minded policeman, who would never dole out harsh justice, even if deserved. He found ways to keep the peace - by using peace as his guide. He was a great friend, who always came to the aid of those who knew him. Andy didn’t let anything get between him and doing what was right for a buddy. He was a patient and understanding boss to Barney, no matter what antics the Deputy managed to create. And even though he was handsome and eligible, he was the consummate gentleman, always respectful of his ‘lady friends’. He was clearly trained in this by his wonderful Aunt Bea, who he not only provided and cared for, but also respected beyond reproach. But even greater than all these things - he was an awesome Dad to Opie. He was always there for homework and to give him sage advice, regardless of how hard his day had been. He knew when to be firm and when to have fun. And that brings us to the best memory of all – Andy and Opie walking to the fishing hole with their poles over their backs. Yes, Sherriff Andy carried a great deal of responsibility, but he knew when it was time to put it all down and relax with the kid.
So tonight, we toast to Sherriff Andy and the man who brought him to life. We are drinking a simple cocktail, symbolically called, “Blue Frogs”, named for a segment when Opie was sure that they existed and Andy obliged him like a good Dad would. Remember to take time to make memories with those who look to you as their Andy Taylor. CHEERS FRIENDS!
