Courage to be a "Momma Warrior"

It’s Friday, and boy, are we ready for Cocktails at the Henderson’s.  We had already had a bit of a challenging week, but it was certainly topped off this morning by the radio clock to the terrible news coming out of Colorado.  Friends, I have been thinking about this today, and I can’t help but imagine what I would do as a parent if I were in such a horrific situation, trapped in a theater.  These thoughts come in tandem with some realizations I’ve had this week regarding how the protective mother spirit is a trait that I will never be without, no matter how old or how far away my ‘kids’ find themselves.  So tonight’s toast will be more somber than usual, but I think we all are feeling that way anyhow.
This tragedy today brought two parts of a mother’s protection to mind.  First, that of just standing in the way of any harm that is coming at our children.  There isn’t any weapon big enough to stop me from charging someone who is coming after my people. There had to be mother’s in that theater who found themselves right there.  God bless them and I pray for their families.  But there is also the other side of the coin – those times when we overprotect our kids, and stand in the way of correction or adjustment that they really need to receive in order to be healthy and survive.  Hearing that the mother of the shooter ‘wasn’t surprised’ made me flinch.  Did she worry that he might do something some day, but avoided the hard work of bringing him into the light of law enforcement or medical help?  I am not trying to judge or place blame on this poor woman.  My heart aches for her and her family.  But truly, it is often more difficult to allow your children to get helped through tough circumstances than it is to take a bullet for them.  The bullet might end your ability to see the result, but watching them face facts is like living with the bullet lodged in your heart.  As mothers, we have to be warriors.  Warriors who are ready with the weapons of steeled courage, brutal honesty and dogged determination.  Going to war doesn’t always mean fighting human demons.  Sometimes, we might be called to go to war with our children against the demons within.
So tonight, we are drinking to a mother’s protective nature, and one that has that wise warrior spirit our children, no matter their age, will always need.  SALUTE TO MOMMA WARRIORS!
