Perhaps it's my early memories of picking wildflowers to leave on our neighbor, Mrs. Burkdoll's doorstep, or that we were allowed to start swimming in the irrigation ditch, but I have always had a soft spot for May. As I thought about what to focus on this week in regard to May, it occurred to me that many of the best things we say begin with the words, "May your...". Blessings and wishes, both sweet and cynical, will most likely begin with the word 'may'. This brought me to the fun task of collecting some of my favorite 'may your' toasts. I have cited the authors where I could find one, but as you'll see, most of them are unknown and oft recycled. Some have direct meaning, and others make you ponder deeper meanings, but they all are designed to bring a smile.
A Friday May:
Good morning! May your day be filled with random outbursts of infectious giggles! Doing the happy Friday dance.
A May for your future prosperity:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May today mark the beginning of many new joys and accomplishments... and a continuation of all of the good things that you have already achieved.
May you always feel that what you have is enough.
May you begin your day with confidence and optimism. May at the end of the day you be satisfied with all that you did today.
May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.
A May for milestones:
May your day be filled with warm memories and bright hopes for the future. Happy Anniversary.
May your day be filled with presents-both real and spiritual. Happy Birthday!
May everything in your life sparkle with a radiance that comes only from happiness. Happy Boss Day!
May your marriage be filled with all the right ingredients: a heap of love, a dash of humor, a touch of romance, and a spoonful of understanding. May your joy last forever.
May your birthday be filled with generic well-wishes on your Facebook wall from people you barely know.
A May that challenges you:
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.
May you always do what you are afraid to do.
May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears. (Mandela)
A May for the Holidays:
May your days be merry and bright and may all your Christmases be white.
May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness.
A May from the Irish (my favorites):
May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day. May songbirds serenade you every step along the way. May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that's always blue. And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through. (Irish)
May you get to Heaven a half hour before the Devil knows you are dead... (Irish)
May your days be many and your troubles be few (Irish)
May you always have work for your hands to do. May your pockets hold always a coin or two. May the sun shine bright on your windowpane. May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near you. And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you. (Irish)
A May that we will not hear when said for us:
May you rest in peace...
A May with sarcasm and a chuckle attached:
Deadbeat parents, may your day be filled with guilt and shame.
May your summer be like a roll of toilet paper long and useful.
May the itch of a thousand crabs affect the one who ruins your day and may their arms be too short to scratch.
May the taste of your words remain on your lips...
May you always remember - it could be worse.
May you always have white if you run out of red....
So here's to the wishes of May, and the hopes we can give to others. Let's strive this month to dole out a few meaningful statements to those whose paths we cross, no matter how minor it might seem. You never know what a change your wishes might bring to another's life. For you, my reader, I have this special wish:
Life can be hard, but there is always hope. Hope for tomorrow. A day where anything can happen. You can start a NEW day. A NEW life. It's your choice to do whatever your mind can think up. Because life's a blank page... an empty photograph just waiting to be filled with whatever it is that you love. So raise a glass and toast to this NEW month. CHEERS FRIENDS!
