This week, I took a closer look at the subject of momentum on my Joyous Perspective blog and page. In all the reading, musing and observation, I was able to find three thoughts on "momentum" that kept coming back around. So below, you will find each of those and the explanation for their importance. Let's start out with some sage advice:
~Will Rogers
1) Momentum demands movement.
Most of life is routine and dull, and it does not require inspiration. But routine is the momentum that moves us forward. It is the constant movement that takes us to the next point of the plan. We reach our non-incidental commitments and our lofty heights with daily progress. We can sink into the mire of feeling uninspired if we insist, but we should still move. If you stand around waiting for inspiration, you'll watch the parade move down the street. Without you. When you feel stuck, remember what you believe in. We all believe in something, even if it's just that the Sun will rise and then set. A belief is just thought that has momentum. It has a motion and a velocity that logic doesn't always contain. Believing can lead to conceiving, and then, delivery.
You also might just need a little push. Sometimes being pushed to the wall gives you the necessary momentum to get over it. We all have our go-to people who are happy to put a spur to our butts when needed.
There is the reality that being pushed can cause more problems for you. Which brings me to my next thought...
2) Don't get in front of untrusted forces.
When moving along in life, look both ways when you come to an intersection. Every day we go into the path of objects that have momentum, some physical, some emotional and even those spiritual. Before you put yourself in someone or something else's path, be sure you have the speed to keep up or get out of the way. The need to move can be especially real if you don't recognize that force, or have no idea what's behind it. An object in motion will stay in motion until it meets a resisting force, so remain on the move. Unless you have a good reason for stopping it, avoid being that resisting force. Why cause unnecessary friction?
Sometimes, friction can be turned into momentum. The kind that reminds you to move out of the way and go another direction. You might be sitting stagnant, but a little friction will stir the waters again and get you going. That's the fantastic thing about physics.
3) If you've got it, flaunt it.
Momentum sustained is like catching a soft wind in a sail. And you just glide. When you find it, don't let go.
Keep your sails filled and your direction fixed. You'll be a force to be reconned with.
So tonight, in honor of momentum, I've created a drink that is also named after our newly minted season - Fall. I call it "Fall(ing) for Momentum." Letting go and doing a little falling is a great way to pick up momentum, but you just have to be sure you've got enough control to stop before you meet an unmovable force. Here's to finding your good 'mo.' Cheers.
Joy's Fall(ing) for Momentum Cocktail**
6 oz of Angry Orchard Apple Cider
6 oz of Illinois Apple Wine
2 oz of Orange Liquor
Two tablespoons of Maple Syrup
One bottle of Prosecco, chilled
Rosemary sprigs for garnish
Combine apple cider, orange liqueur, wine and maple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until the container is thoroughly cold.
Pour mixture into champagne flutes and top with the chilled Prosecco.
Garnish each glass with a sprig of rosemary. Cheers.
**Always drink responsibly.
